Boags Closure Lion’s disappointing decision to close the iconic Boag’s Brewery in Launceston is a real blow for the Launceston community. It also highlights how difficult it is to run a manufacturing business in Australia, and the importance of Tasmanian governments of all colours and levels, including local government, doing everything they can to make sure that Tasmania is as competitive a place as possible to do business. This includes minimal red tape and regulation, the lowest possible energy prices, and low taxation. We recognise that in taking this decision, Lion has committed to support affected workers, and the community through a new Community Fund, and to work proactively and constructively with government and the private sectors towards a new future for the site. We also note that Lion quite appropriately will be repaying the $1 million Tasmanian Government grant for the Brewhouse development. ENDS.
