Tasmanian employers are being encouraged to check their workplace practices following a significant increase in Fair Work Ombudsman compliance activity.

The regulator recovered **$453 million in underpaid wages and entitlements** for more than 181,000 Australian workers in 2025–26, **up 27 per cent** on the previous year.

It also conducted more than **2,680 proactive investigations** – **an increase of 86 per cent**.

While these are national figures, they send a clear message to Tasmanian businesses: employers should not wait for a complaint or contact from the regulator before checking they are compliant.

**What does this mean for Tasmanian employers?**

Underpayments are not always deliberate. Mistakes can arise from applying the wrong award or classification, failing to update pay rates, or incorrectly applying overtime, penalty rates and allowances.

Employers should regularly check that employees are correctly classified, current pay rates and entitlements are being applied, and workplace records meet legal requirements.

This is particularly important when employee duties change, a business restructures or new wage rates come into effect.

**Not sure if you are getting it right?**

Identifying an issue early is much easier than dealing with an underpayment or compliance investigation later.

TCCI members can contact our Workplace Relations team for practical advice and support, including help to:

- Understand penalty rates, overtime and allowances
- Review employment contracts and workplace arrangements
- Meet pay slip and record-keeping requirements
