  Recent surprise inspections by the Fair Work Ombudsman found 22 of 28 Hobart food businesses were non-compliant with workplace laws, resulting in more than $129,000 in recovered wages and $24,570 in fines.

Of the 28 businesses inspected, 22 were found to be non-compliant. The most common breaches involved:

- Minimum rates of pay
- Penalty rates and overtime
- Employee classifications
- Pay slips
- Time and wage records

The inspections resulted in 31 Compliance Notices and fines totalling $24,570.

While the inspections focused on hospitality businesses, the findings are a useful reminder for all employers to regularly check their workplace arrangements.

Modern awards can be complex, and changes to an employee’s age, duties, hours or employment status may affect their correct classification and rate of pay.
