The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI) has welcomed the City of Launceston’s decision to drop its 30.4-hour week proposal after a strong, coordinated campaign led by TCCI mobilizing key industry groups and the community.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said the result was a clear win for common sense, services and ratepayers.

> “TCCI pulled the business community together – including the HIA, Civil Contractors Federation and Tasmanian Farmers – and the Council has listened,” Mr Bailey said. “We made it clear the 30.4-hour model risked poorer services and higher costs. The new approach is far more balanced.”

The revised agreement will retain a standard 38-hour week, while still allowing flexible options such as compressed four-day weeks and nine-day fortnights, alongside agreed wage increases and existing entitlements.

Mr Bailey paid tribute to Council CEO Sam Johnson for responding to community and business concerns.

“We congratulate Sam Johnson for being prepared to rethink the proposal. That sort of leadership builds trust with business and the community,” he said.
