A new independent report by respected economist Saul Eslake has found that Marinus Link is in Tasmania’s interest - and Australia’s.

Commissioned by Clean Energy Tasmania, the report examines the economic case for the project and concludes that Marinus Link:

• Is in Australia’s national interest;

• Improves Tasmania’s energy security;

• Unlocks greater value from Tasmania’s hydro assets; and

• Helps break the long-running stalemate on new electricity generation and demand in Tasmania.

The report also finds there are good reasons to expect Tasmanian electricity prices to increase by less than they otherwise would without Marinus Link.

TCCI Board Member and Clean Energy Tasmania Chair Ian Jones said the report helps address a gap in the public debate.

“There has been a lot of discussion about what Marinus will cost, but not enough clarity about what it will deliver. Saul Eslake’s work cuts through that. He is one of Australia’s most respected independent economists and his conclusion is clear - Marinus stacks up.”

For too long, much of the public discussion has focused on the cost of the project. This report provides an independent assessment of what Marinus Link is expected to deliver for Tasmania’s economy, energy system and future growth opportunities.

Clean Energy Tasmania commissioned this report to help inform the debate with evidence and independent analysis.
