New Cabinet must get to work

The TCCI is the voice of business in Tasmania and is calling on the new Cabinet expected to be announced by Premier Rockliff today to hit the ground running and get on with the job.

TCCI CEO, Michael Bailey, said the Rockliff Government had faced a number of challenges over the past 12 months.

“We’ve had two former Liberal backbench MPs causing issues, an early election, the Spirt of Tasmania fiasco, the spiralling cost of doing business, a horror budget and now a Cabinet reshuffle,” Mr Bailey said.

“The Government must now focus on helping businesses to thrive, invest and employ more Tasmanians.

“In particular, we want to see clear and decisive action on the following issues by the end of the year:

  • Reducing the cost of doing business in Tasmania
  • Boosting Tasmania’s participation rate
  • Resolving the Spirit of Tasmania ferries fiasco, including clear, believable and achievable timelines for when the berthing infrastructure will be ready in Devonport
  • Supporting businesses impacted by the ferry fiasco, including additional day sailings to ensure a strong summer season
  • Unequivocal support for Marinus Link
  • State approvals locked in for Whaleback Ridge and Robbins Island wind farms and a clear pathway for other wind farms
  • GBE reform

“The business community stands ready to play its part and do its share of the heavy lifting, but we want a Government with the energy and vision to match.”
