The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called on the Australian Education Union to abandon this week’s proposed strike action, and instead put the Government’s wage offer to a vote with a recommendation it be supported.

“In Tasmania’s current dire fiscal situation, the offer being put to teachers appears fair and reasonable”, TCCI Acting CEO Colleen Reardon said.

“It’s important to understand that the offer also includes a myriad of other changes which will benefit teachers, including a base salary boost of $500 for most teachers, increased allowances, and reduction in workload measures.

“This week’s rolling school closures will cause havoc for parents and for our economy, forcing many parents to ditch work in order to care for children who should otherwise be in school, learning.

“There’s enough going on in the world right now without adding even more stress and economic uncertainty.
