The TCCI is the voice of business in Tasmania and is today releasing its position on the Macquarie Point stadium.
TCCI CEO, Michael Bailey, said that over the past year the TCCI board has given careful consideration of the issue and has developed six key principles that outline its position on the proposed stadium.
“The TCCI supports a stadium because it will be a transformative project for Tasmania,” Mr Bailey said.
“If we get this right, a stadium will support local jobs, local businesses and become an iconic piece of infrastructure for the entire community. The benefits will be far-reaching and long-lasting.
“We believe that the six principles we are outlining today will help ensure that the community and the business community in particular, can have confidence in the project.
“These principles have been developed in consultation with our membership and other stakeholders.
“We know that not everyone will support our stance, but this is too good an opportunity to let slip through our fingers.”
TCCI Principles for the proposed Macquarie Point stadium
1. Investment must be supported by a robust business case.
2. Investment should be about more than just a stadium – it is an opportunity for wider investment in public and private infrastructure to maximise the benefits for the local economy and lifestyle.
3. Honour the heritage of the site in accordance with the intentions of the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme, while also considering existing uses such as the cenotaph and regatta.
4. There must be no negative impacts on existing businesses and uses in the area during construction and operation – including access, noise, shadows, sightlines.
5. The proposal must maintain the important role of the area as a working port and Antarctic gateway.
6. The Government should consider all options, including a public-private partnership model that maximises private sector investment, funding, and design, and minimises the risk to state finances.
