The TCCI is pleased to see the first meeting of the Government’s Multi-partisan Budget Panel today calling it a positive step forward towards getting the State’s finances under control.

TCCI Chair, Wayne Davy, said the TCCI has an unashamedly pro-business approach to this process.

“Everyone in business knows that the key to a successful business in to control your costs, and that is what this government has to do,” Mr Davy said.

“The size of the state bureaucracy has grown by over 30 per cent between 2016 and 2024, completely outpacing the growth in population, which is simply unsustainable.

“Of particular concern is the massive growth in the State’s health budget, where money is being pumped in at an alarming rate with little to no accountability as to how it is spent other than to try and avoid bad headlines for the government of the day.

“We are also concerned by the State’s annual $400 million unfunded superannuation liability which we believe needs to be looked at closely as part of budget repair.

“The TCCI is absolutely against any tax increases.  Unfortunately, some politicians, bureaucrats and economists regard business as a cash cow, with no understanding of the importance of business to our community, or just how close to the wind many businesses fly.

“Both major parties promised not to increase taxes prior to the election and to do so now would be a breach of faith.”
